VADODARA: An old couple was rescued after a house in their building caught fire in Dandia Bazaar of the city on Thursday night. Vijay Kelkar (72) and Pratibha Kelkar (65) were stranded in the second floor after a fire broke out on the first floor of the building at around 10.15 pm.
Fire brigade personnel soon reached the building and rescued the couple.
“We were having dinner when the incident took place.
The first floor of the building was my office where various ingredients and colour materials for pharmaceutical products had been stored. Timely operation by Fire brigade put off the fire,” said Dilip Kelkar, owner of the three-storeyed building.
He said a short circuit might have caused the fire. The stairway towards the ground was blocked with smoke and flames. Dilip’s elder brother Vijay and his wife Pratibha were unable to get down and had to be rescued by fire brigade personnel.
“The house was located in a narrow lane. Vehicles were parked everywhere and this made it difficult for us. We had to use nearly 20,000 litres of water to put off the fire. There was no casualty in the fire accident,” said fire officer Manish Mod.
