The district police have cracked the gang rape case, in which two men posed as policemen and allegedly abducted and raped a 25-year-old woman at knifepoint in a cashew grove on Monday night by ‘securing’ one of the two accused even as M Durai, assumed office as the new Superintendent of Police on Friday.
After the incident came to light at the early hours on Tuesday when the accused dropped the victim at the new bus stand area, after holding her in captivity for about ten hours inside the forest, four special teams were formed and in a swift move, they secured one of the two suspects on Friday.
A senior official interrogated the accused, who confessed to the crime. After he was taken to the scene of crime, he gave a detailed account as how, he and his accomplice abducted the woman and took her inside the forest, the sources said. The special teams have fanned out to secure his accomplice, a driver, the sources added.
The accused, a mechanic, aged about 30 years, was picked up by the police based on details of the type of motorbike used by him and his accomplice.
Police cracked the case two days after Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Anand Kumar Somani reviewed the situation on Wednesday with Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police N M Mylvahanan, who was then in-charge of Sivaganga district.
Police said the woman, working in a mobile shop in Karaikudi, had gone with her friend to the isolated place near the grove late on Monday evening when two middle aged men, clad in khaki trousers, came to the spot on motorcycles and abducted her. Before leaving the spot, they grabbed the mobile phone of her friend and his vehicle key.
