Yerawada open jail: Cellphone seized from murder convict

Senior police inspector S A Patil said Yakub has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

A mobile phone was recovered from a murder convict, whom police identified as Yakub Khan, in the open jail in Yerawada. An offence was registered at Yerawada police station on Thursday evening. Cellphones are not allowed in jail.

“He is serving punishment in the open jail. We suspect he used the cell phone to speak to his family members.” Cops and jail authorities are probing how he got the cell phone inside the jail.

Earlier, on January 24, a mobile phone was recovered from another convict, Rajendra Tiwari, at the open jail in Visapur prison in Shrigonda, Ahmednagar on Saturday. Jail superintendent Dnyaneshwar Kale is probing the matter.

In May 2014, two cellphones were reportedly recovered in jail. It may be recalled that the cell phone was found near a drainage line next to security circle number 2 in May 2014. Jail authorities and police initiated a probe.

Investigators checked details of calls made from this cell phone. Investigators zeroed in on five guards deployed at these locations in jail during the time when the phone calls were made. The five jail guards were suspended on January 17.

In September 2013, a cell phone was found in Yerawada Central Prison. Investigation revealed that the cellphones were used by notorious gangsters and criminals in the prison.
