A first-year student died after falling off the 9th floor of his hostel building in Dwarka’s Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University on Thursday night.

Police said the 28-year-old student was partying with his friends to celebrate India’s victory against Bangladesh in the cricket World Cup quarter finals. Anmol said, “Archit and Mayuk came to my room around 8 pm and we were there till 9.30 pm. Later, we went to the mess to have dinner and then we went to the terrace. Mayuk saw a water tank there and insisted on climbing it. Archit tried to stop him, but he did not listen. The shaft next to the tanker was open. When Mayuk did not return for a long time, Archit and I went looking for him. We didn’t find him there and ran down. We found Mayuk in a pool of blood. We alerted the guard and rushed Mayuk to the Rockland Hospital. But he didn’t make it.”

Festive offer

Police were informed around 11 pm on Thursday and the body has been sent for an autopsy. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Suman Goel said, “We have registered a case of causing death by negligence against the college authorities. They did not take adequate precautions to ensure the safety of students.”

Joshi’s classmate Yukti Kambiri said, “We met him the day before. Our department held a condolence meeting in the morning.”
