JAIPUR: All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), an apex body of Muslims, is holding its two-day 24{+t}{+h} national executive meet in Jaipur from March 21 to discuss rights of women in Sharia, freedom of speech, succession of property, Islamic laws on divorce and adoption. It will also decide the roadmap ahead for Muslims.
Senior members of the board indicated that issues like surya namaskar, 'ghar wapasi' and beef ban in Maharashtra which are not in the agenda will also be discussed as it is affecting the community.
"It becomes important for a highest body of Muslims representing all schools of Islam to discuss these burning issues," said founding member of AIMPLB Kamal Faruqui. Jamea-tul-Hidaya, an educational group is hosting and organizing the event.
The body held its first round meeting on Friday. It discussed cases like court orders relating to divorce in contradiction to Sharia. They also criticized the recent spate of attacks on minorities, especially on Christians. They feel that these are testing times for the Modi government.
"The manner in which fringe elements are taking over liberal voices and creating communal environment makes it our duty to keep the community away from such propaganda," said Faruqui. Samra Sultana, one of the coordinators of the session on women, said, "AIMPLB defines laws for Indian Muslims. The session on women is very important since it will clearly define the role of Muslim women in the present context. The issues which will be discussed are role of women in household and society, education of women and violence against women." The conference will conclude on Sunday.
