Inspired by the tradition of the Silk Route era, Jaipur-based designers Rahul and Shikha, for their label Vrisa, narrated a story with their collection titled Samarkand at the Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/ Resort 2015.
Samarkand – a city in Uzbekistan – was of vital importance when the exchange of art, culture and textile was made possible. “It was the time when exchange of cultures and textiles was happening between India and other Asian countries,” says Shikha.
The collection is also a tribute to Tsunamika, a doll made of cloth fabric by fisherwomen who were traumatised by the Tsunami disaster. It’s a symbol of hope and unconditional giving.
Besides colourful and intricately detailed embroidery, the ensembles were daintily adorned with motifs like the sun, moon, flower, leaves, fruits, vines and birds that were symbolic of the tradition they were derived from. The colour palettes selected were complementary to the needlework, with hues like white, orange and mint green. One outfit that stood out was the anarkali kurta paired with a skirt and a draped scarf with a colourful pom-pom edging.
