On Monday, when Mumbai girls Pankhuri Awasthi and Uppekha Jain uploaded a video they'd shot with the help of some friends at Bandra's Chapel Road, they had little idea how it'll unfold.

Within 48 hours of going online, their song "#RapAgainstRape" had more than 200,000 views on YouTube and the number has been swelling since. "We've had responses come in from all over the world—we're so overwhelmed. We thought that we were making a video for Indians, to affect Indian sentiments, and somehow it's just gone across the world!" says Jain, a theatre actor who moved to Mumbai four years ago from Canada.

In the song, which clocks in at a little over three minutes, the duo, who go by the name BomBaebs, address sexual violence against women in "the land of rapes". Says Awasthi, a TV host by profession: "We are both women of India and women ought to take a stand in this country. We created a rap because it is by far the most engaging medium to get people to listen."

Taking over the internet by storm, the song has had supporters and critics on social media. Jain adds that their video is, in no way, targeted solely towards men. "There are many amazing men out there. This video is not about male bashing at all. It is about bashing bystanders to crime—men and women alike."
