I cry when I see films. Because when I started acting, I was told not to hold back the emotions,” says Kapoor.

Actor Ram Kapoor, who became the face of the mature notion of onscreen romance with Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, is back on primetime after a break. In Delhi for the promotion of the much-awaited television show, Dil Ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane, which goes on air next week on Sony, the 41-year-old shared his excitement of stepping into his new role of a husband caught in an emotional turmoil. “I am a very sensitive person. If you are a creative person, you have to be sensitive. I cry when I see films. Because when I started acting, I was told not to hold back the emotions,” he said, when we caught up with him at the Taj Mahal Hotel on Wednesday.

Inspired by Mahesh Bhatt’s 1989 film Daddy, starring Pooja Bhatt and Anupam Kher, Kapoor’s new show is touted as one of the biggest launches this year. Kapoor plays Ram Ahuja, who tries all that he can to save his terminally ill wife Anandita, essayed by actor Gurdeep Kohli. Sharing insight into his role, Kapoor says, “The situation of money in the family is tight, but he is blessed with an amazing family. He has a life partner who he adores and their family life is full of happiness. I didn’t need any preparation for this role, and connected to this character instantly since I am married and have a daughter.”

Clarifying claims that the series is based on the sidelines of Daddy, Kapoor is quick to point out, “It is definitely inspired by Daddy. As in, when a person breaks down and how his daughter chomes and helps. A film has a beginning and an ending, whereas in a television series, you have a beginning and it doesn’t end after that, it drags on.” About sharing screen space with Kohli, his Kasamh Se (2006) co-star, he says, “It is fun teaming up with Gurdeep again. We share a great professional relationship. Though her role is really small, it will be remembered for a long time.”

Kapoor believes this will prove to be an important show. “I want India to think about the issue this show is addressing. There are many families that go through such turbulent times, yet we don’t get to know the reaction of family members, close relatives and friends.”

Pointing out the reason for his break from television after Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Kapoor says, “After the show got over, many channels offered me similar roles that I refused. Where is the growth if I keep doing the same roles because then the audience will say, ‘kuch naya dikhao’. It is easy to fall prey to the trap of doing what is successful, but your growth will stop.” Kapoor will balance out his film work with the daily soap. On the big screen, he will next be seen with Sunny Leone in Kuch Kuch Locha Hai.

Festive offer

Defying the image of a typical hero, the actor seems satisfied with his appearance on screen, as he believes in “breaking the mould and being unique”. Personally, he wants to lose weight now. “I want to be healthier and lose weight because I am growing old and aspire for a healthy existence,” he says.

Bhatt, who has penned down the film’s concept, points out that the show celebrates life in the face of death and is inspired from a phase of his life in 2007 when he lost his friend and guide, UG Krishnamurti. He believes that Kapoor stands as the perfect choice for the protagonist, and says, “I had seen Ram in Student of the Year and also saw him on television. There was something very warm and endearing about him. I wanted someone whom the audience can sympathise with, to show how you can love someone so much that you could possibly strangle your own happiness.”
