Mumbai Metro brought under purview of RTI Act

In its order, the commission said, “Considering the fact that Metro is providing an important public service, under the control and with the financial support of the government, the commission concludes that it is a public authority and is amenable to the RTI Act, 2005.”

The ruling was given by State Chief Information Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad and State Information Commissioner Ajit Kumar Jain.

The commission directed the MMOPL to take all necessary measures, including the appointment of public information officers, and furnish within a month information that Gandhi had sought.

The MMOPL has constructed and operates the 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro that came up on a public private partnership model.

Private companies Reliance Infrastructure and Veolia Transport hold 69 per cent and 5 per cent stakes in the company, respectively, while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has a 26 per cent stake.
