At the finale of Manish Malhotra’s Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2015 show in the grand Great Eastern Home, the models walked out holding placards with words like ‘Equality’, ‘Gender’ and ‘Empower’. The designer was taking a stand against gender-based violence and for gender equality and he was using this most visible of platforms to do it.

It was similar to the protest held by Chanel at their Spring 2015 show. While the Chanel show raised questions about whether this kind of soft protesting really serves a cause, it’s still worth noting the positive thought that goes behind it. Manish has partnered with the WEvolve Campaign and World Bank who work with the creative industry to empower young people to challenge the norms of gender violence.

But along with the message, the clothes deserve a mention of their own. In his signature style, the designer updated traditional Indianwear for a contemporary audience. Off-shoulder blouses, fringed halter tops and saris paired with kurtas and crop tops were perfect for the modern bride. The best part of Manish’s clothes is always the details—the intricate embroideries and sparkling textures where enough to leave us dazzled.
