Emisphere Technologies announced the launch of Eligen B12 (cyanocobalamin 100mcg, salcaprozate sodium [SNAC] 100mg) for the dietary management of patients who have a vitamin B12 deficiency associated with a disease or condition that cannot be managed by a modification of the normal diet alone.

Eligen B12 is the first once-daily prescription medical food tablet to normalize B12 levels without an injection. The tablets incorporate Eligen Technology, which uses SNAC as a carrier to help bring B12 through the gastric lining and into the bloodstream separate from the protein in the stomach that usually facilitates B12 absorption.

A study compared the effect of Eligen B12 and intramuscular B12 injection on plasma B12 levels in patients with demonstrated B12 deficiency (n=50). Both products normalized B12 levels at first observation on Day 15 and maintained levels over the three-month duration of the study. Another study compared bioavailability in in patients treated with Eligen B12 and a standard over-the-counter (OTC) oral B12 supplement (n=20). The bioavailability of Eligen B12 was more than double the OTC oral B12 supplement (5.09% vs. 2.16%).

Eligen B12 tablets are available in 30-count bottles.
