Tarang, which has been providing platform to youngsters featured Singapore-based young Carnatic vocalist, Sushma Somasekharan at Saptaparni, Banjara Hills. Sushma otherwise is a practising chartered accountant in Singapore but her love for music took her to Bhagya Murthy two decades ago and still continues to learn from her.

She was also under the tutelage of Lalitha Sivakumar daughter-in-law of D.K. Pattammal. She has been taking part in December music sessions at Chennai.

She was very ably supported by young and talented Tejasvi Mallela on violin and T.P. Balasubramaniam on mridangam.

Sushma opened with short presentation of Bhairavi for Yaaro Ivar Yaaro , composed by Arunachala Kavi. She then presented Ramachandram Bhavayami of Deekshitar in Vasantha that ideally suited her vocal tenor. She then sang the popular Brochevaarevaru raa in Khamas with melody filled sahitya expression and mature devotional appeal that this Mysore Vasudevacharya’s composition deserves. Dhanyudevado in Malayamarutham of Patnam Subramanya Iyer was presented with nicely built elaborate alapana. The kriti rendition too was with sahitya clarity. The swarakalpana too carried melodic appeal.

A brisk Tamil composition Ramanukku Mannanmudi of Arunachala Kavi in Hindolam, led to the presentation of the main composition in Kalyani, Etavunara with neraval and swaraprasthara. Sushma’s creative skills in building the raga and also in swarakalpana too were praiseworthy. Tani avartanam presented by Balasubramanyam was impressive.

The latter part of the concert had Rama Rama Yenniro of Purandaradasa in Tillang. It was a delightful rendition by Sushma. Her concert ended with a short viruttam in Raga Desh, Rama Nama Thimaname a composition of Thanjavur Shankara Iyer.
