BJP leaders to meet Jaitley over I-T demand from sugarcane farmers

SURAT: BJP leaders from Surat district will meet finance minister Arun Jaitley today to take up the issue of sugarcane farmers being slapped with income tax notices.
The farmers have threatened an agitation from April 4 after seven sugar cooperative factories of south Gujarat were given income tax notices.
BJP leaders told TOI that the finance ministry had promised to revoke the notices and not levy any income tax from sugar cooperatives on prices given by them to the farmers above fair regulatory price (FRP) fixed by the government.
Income tax department has contended that anything paid above FRP is liable to be taxed.
Mansingh Patel, former BJP MP and chairman of Gujarat State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories said, "If the issue is not sorted out during the ongoing assembly session, farmers will lose patience."
Surat district BJP president Suresh Patel said, "We are hopeful that the necessary amendments will be made and notices given would be withdrawn at the earliest."
However, Jayesh Patel, president of south Gujarat farmers union said that they have decided April 4 as the date to start the agitation so that the government gets time to rethink. "Now, the notices are not revoked, we will be starting our agitation as per planned," he said.
The income tax department had sent notices of recovery Bardoli Sugar, Sayan Sugar, Valsd Sugar, Gandevi Sugar, Maroli Sugar, Madhi Sugar and Chalthan Sugar for recovering total Rs 286 crore.
