Wind farm staff set to strike in row over pay

UP TO 100 staff at one of the country's largest wind farm service providers are to stage a 72-hour work stoppage tomorrow as part of a row over pay increases and cuts to allowances.

The stoppage involves members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU) working at Enercon.

The union is demanding the introduction of a pay structure that reflects significant increases in wages. The duration of the strike could be extended should the dispute remain unresolved.

Enercon is a German-owned company. Its head office is in Tralee, and it has installed 25pc of all turbines on Irish wind farms.

A company statement said: "Today's number of over 180 employees working throughout rural Ireland has been possible due to a culture of direct communication within the company on all levels.

"Over 180 jobs are not the end, we aim for another 50 positions to be added, going forward."
