Polio vaccinator shot dead in Bajaur Agency

Emergency meeting called in Islamabad today to review security plans.

SHABQADAR/ ISLAMABAD: Barely a day after an audacious attack on a polio team in Manserah, another incident took place in Bajaur Agency, leaving a health worker dead and another wounded on Wednesday. An emergency meeting has been called on Thursday (today) in Islamabad to review the security plan for vacinators in the four provinces.

Unidentified assailants opened fire on the polio team in Nawagai subdivision of Bajaur Agency, killing Rooh Ullah and injuring Arif Ullah. The miscreants reportedly managed to flee unchallenged.

A political administration official in Nawagai subdivision Bajaur, Akhunzada Muhammad Yahya, told the media that a search operation has been launched in the area and an investigation opened.

As many as 223,460 children were supposed to be immunised in the three-day campaign started on Monday.

Polio team security meeting

In the wake of back-to-back attacks on polio teams, the federal minister has called an emergency meeting on Thursday (today) to review the security plan for polio workers.

Saud Aziz, Director General, National Crisis Management Cell, Ministry of Interior, will give a briefing based on reports received from the provinces.

Meanwhile, talking to The Express Tribune, Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication Ayesha Raza Farooq said that in view of the frequent attacks on polio workers, an emergency meeting has been scheduled in which all the provincial governments would share the challenges they are facing in providing security to polio teams and the way forward.
