Bhojpuri movies are considered inferior: Sweety Chhabra
After a brief hiatus, Sweety Chhabra is back with a bang. With her platter full with movie projects, Sweety recently did a fantastic job as one of the brand ambassadors of CCL.
RT had a chat with the actress where she revealed her admiration for MS Dhoni, her upcoming projects and more. Excerpts:
Do you enjoy cricket?
I love cricket and follow it a regular basis. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli are my favourite cricketers.
I am very good with the bat and used to play a lot of cricket with my gang in school. However, this is the first time that I have been officially associated with a professional cricket tournament. Im good at playing badminton as well.
Have you met MS Dhoni?
So far, I havent had the opportunity to meet him personally. Maybe next time...
Even a few years back, the Bhojpuri film industry was going great guns. However, not many worthwhile movies are being made now. What went wrong?
Its not that actors dont want to do films with good scripts. Despite having a strong fan base, Bhojpuri industry never received any support from the local government in terms of subsidies or tax cuts. We dont even get enough screens at multiplexes to showcase our work. In such a situation, producers are not willing to risk their money when the prospects for profit are weak. Even producers who want to invest are having a hard time in getting a good script.

PK is probably the first movie where the lead character talks in Bhojpuri all through. Do you think people outside the Bhojpuri belt will become more familiar with Bhojpuri after watching the film?
The problem is that natives love Hindi and English more than Bhojpuri. Go to any multiplex and you'll see it for yourself. Hence, the distributors are forced to release movies in small theaters which creates an impression that Bhojpuri films are inferior and treated as second-class entertainment. Bhojpuri is a very sweet language and I hope people start accepting it like they do Haryanvi or Punjabi.
Tell us about your upcoming movies.
I have just finished shooting for Humse Badhkar Kaun. Aurat Khilona Nahi - a film based on women empowerment released in Mumbai recently. Another film, Chhora Ganga KinaareWala is also set for a release. I've also signed a Hindi movie which will mark my return to Bollywood. Shooting for the same will start sometime in March.
Have you ever thought of shifting to Bollywood films?
I want to work in every language, be it Hindi, Bhojpuri or Punjabi. In fact, I had made my Hindi and Bhojpuri debut about the same time. I have also been in talks with a Punjabi film production house and there are good chances that Ill be working in a Punjabi movie very soon..
Have you been to Ranchi before?
I have been to Ranchi but that was long ago for a cousins marriage. Hence, it's a kind or refreshing trip for me. Ranchi has changed a lot since then. There are wide roads and swanky shopping complexes. In fact, I did a lot of shopping here.
