Cadres of Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a demonstration in front of the Nagercoil Municipal office protesting against the undue delay in implementation of underground drainage (UGD) scheme in Nagercoil town.

Inaugurating the demonstration, S. Noor Mohamed, former MLA and State Committee Member of CPI (M) alleged that the municipality has failed to complete the project within the stipulated time, which affects schoolgoing children, senior citizens and bike riders.

Mr. Mohamed said that all roads including bus routes were dug up for laying pipes and construction of manholes for the UGD work. They were not properly covered. Due to this, people are put to undue hardships during rainy season and after that the dust from the roads affect the lungs of road users.

Instead of taking up the drainage work in a phased manner and restoring the dug-up roads step by step, all the roads in the town were dug at the same time. The restoration work was also not carried out properly, he added.

The leaders who spoke at the agitation alleged a mega scam in awarding contract for clearing solid wastes in 34 out of 52 wards in the town.

The demonstration was presided by A. Meenakshi Sundaram, Town Committee Member. District Secretary N. Murugesan spoke.
