JAMMU, Mar 17: Pancham Group’s presentation Dr Shanker Shesh’s Hindi play Komal Gandhar, came out as a real treat for the audience and one of the achievements of ongoing annual drama festival being organized by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, at auditorium of Govt. College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, here today.
The play Komal Gandhar, contrary to events mentioned in the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, is an imaginative recreation of the plausible causes of the downfall of Kauravas. Woven around Gandhari, the play’s plot takes up from the point where Bhishama in his bid to find a suitable heir to the vast kingdom of Kauravas, gets married the blind Dhritrashtra to Gandhari without letting her know about the blindness of her future husband. In response to the injustice, she vows to cover her eyes with a cloth band. In the parade of events that follow, she emerges as a pivotal character to shape the events of Mahabharata.
Today’s production conceived and directed by Gurmeet Kour Jamwal was marked with excellent display of acting skills by the team of actors led by Gurmeet Kour Jamwal who also played the role of Gandhari.
It really goes to the credit of team of the actors who successfully enacted various mytho-historical characters with strong and high pitch voices and clear dialog delivery, synchronized with suitable body movements and gestures.
It is a pity that a fine actress and now director, like Gurmeet Kour Jamwal with her rare appearances on stage has left the Jammu theatre a shade poorer. One only wishes that instead of acting only in festival plays once in a year, she appears regularly on stage.
Other actors who gave equally good performances included Dhanesh Dogra as Dhritrashtra, Neeraj Magotra as Sanjay, Dimpla Sharma as Bhishama, Arya Veer Singh as Shakuni, Heemanshu Sharma as Duryodhan and Seema Bhatti as Daasi.
Tomorrow on the last day of the annual drama festival, Sharad Joshi’s original Hindi play in Dogri ‘Ik Ha Gada urf Alladad Khan’ will be presented by The Performers.
