In a state led by a woman chief minister, incidentally no women candidate is up for the fray for the upcoming polls of the city’s oldest high-profile club – Rajpath Club, which has financial reserves of Rs 78 crore and over 10,000 members. With polls slated on March 22, more than 60 candidates are in fray for 30 posts as part of two warring groups.

“We have around 200-odd female members at the club, but they usually never contest the elections in the club for any posts. There has been no women candidate contesting the polls in it history. Members are usually males and their spouses have some privileges but no post. However, we may be thinking of starting a women wing, although it is not currently part of our poll manifesto,” said Suresh Gamdiwala, joint secretary of the club and owner of Shrestha Dairy brand in city and member of Dani-led panel.

Even as AMC has pulled down illegal hoarding put up by the warring groups, in a press meet on Monday current president Paresh Dani, who is re-contesting for the post, and his panel group “United Rajpath” has called for a open discussion or “Lok Adalat” with the Jagdish Patel-led panel on Wednesday. The even came up with a manifesto to woo its 10,000 strong membership.

“We have around 400 doctors, 450 members from real estate sector and 1,100 from other prominent clubs in the city like Sports Club and 1,300 from Karnavati Club located on Ahmedabad’s SG Highway as our members. Membership fees is currently Rs 10 lakhs plus service charges and we have proposed to make the transfer fee which is currently pegged at Rs 4 lakh to reduce it by 50 per cent and for transfer of club membership to family members from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 21,000,” said Anil Patel, chairman of Gujarat Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board and member of Dani-led panel.

“Under Dani’s tenure, close to Rs 22 crore have been spent for club developmental activities and providing amenities. Under N G Patel’s tenure as president in 2001 who is with the other panel, no development work was undertaken,” said J B Patel, member of “United Rajpath”.

Paresh Dani, who faced a lot of flak for an interstate cricket betting racket operating from the club and for holding polls almost one and half years later, said, “For the betting issue, we had given all CCTV footage to the police and even the two members who were involved were asked to resign.”

Among the notable names and heavyweights who are members of the club include — Gautam Adani promoter of Adani Group, CMD of Dishman Pharma Janmejay Vyas, Founder of Motif Inc Kaushal Mehta, Ruchir Modi of Torrent Group, senior Gujarat Congress leader Siddharth Patel, Mahendrasinh Vaghela, son of Congress heavyweight Shankersinh Vaghela, former CM Dilip Parikh, former deputy CM Narhari Amin.
