Private schools oppose hike

March 17, 2015 06:29 pm | Updated September 28, 2016 02:42 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The Telangana Recognised Private School Correspondents JAC here on Tuesday requested Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to exempt private schools running in the State from the hike in property tax.

“We received notices from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in January about the increased property tax. Our category for taxation has been changed to commercial, whereas it was under the domestic bracket previously,” said K. Narsing Rao, convenor of the JAC.

Mr. Rao stated that if the municipal body presses for the tax in commercial slab from private schools, which is above Rs.1 lakh per institutions, managements will be forced to shut shop. “The hike is a result of amending a Government Order under the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, dated March 4, 2011. But we got notices about the increase now,” he explained.

The JAC members said that their pleas are yet to reach the Chief Minister, as meeting the GHMC Commissioner and other officials from the State Government were of any use. “There are about 4,000 private schools here and over one lakh students will be affected,” said Mr. Rao.
