Samsung's next smartwatch may come with 8-core processor

According to a report from Pocketnow, Samsung's rumoured round watch, dubbed Orbis, may feature a beastly Exynos 7420 processor. This is the same processor that is being used by the company's latest Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones.

If this rumour materializes the smartwatch will be much more capable than a lot of smartphones in the market. The dramatic increase in the processing power of the smartwatch will also require a powerful battery to support it and to fit so much in a device that is supposed to be worn on a wrist will be a big challenge for Samsung.

The present generation smartwatches are maxing out at Snapdragon 400 chipset, which powers a lot of good mid-ranger phones. If Samsung is able to up the game by placing an octa-core chipset in a smartwatch then the entire industry may follow eventually.

With second generation watches releasing this year the segment is gradually gaining popularity but aspects like battery life and functionality still need refinement. To make people use the smartwatch developers will have to step in and integrate the entire segment with day to day life. Battery life is an issue that is restricting the expansion of the segment and if Samsung really wants to make an impact, it will be better to introduce a less powerful but more durable smartwatch.
