SURAT: A 45-year-old man was stabbed several times by four unidentified persons near his house in Limbayat area of the city yesterday. He was shifted to Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) where he died during treatment.
Shantaram Mahajan, a resident of Shanti Nagar, was found lying on a bench on the road at the entry gate of his society. Residents of the society spotted him in the early morning hours with stab wounds on his thighs and back.
The deceased was murdered by four persons, who had come on a motorcycle. The attackers stopped Mahajan near the residential society when he was returning from his office around 12 in the midnight and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons, police said.
Mahajan was manager in a leading travel firm in Limbayat. He used to return home late in night from office. Business rivalry could be one of the reasons for the attack on him, police said.
The attackers were aware of Mahajan's schedule. He lived with his two sons and a daughter. His family was not overly concerned when he did not return home yesterday thinking that work may have held him back.
"Mahajan used to stay out till late in the night. Four persons are suspects in his murder case. The suspects were riding a motorcycle. The body has been sent for postmortem and investigation begun in the case," said D D Damor, police inspector, Limabayat.
