PALANPUR: As many as 602
villages and six
municipalities including
Mehsana city in north Gujarat will be devoid of
water for two days beginning Thursday (March 19) midnight.
Water supply to these villages and
civic bodies will be suspended for repair and maintenance work on overhead tanks and pipelines and is likely to be completed by Friday evening.
The entire North Gujarat region including Mehsana city is supplied Narmada water through the pipeline from Dharoi dam.
According to officials of the water supplies and sewerage board there was large amount of silt deposition in the pipeline near Vav in Satlasna taluka of Mehsana district because of high pressure of the water.
"The normal water supply is likely to be restored latest by Saturday," said D P Chaudhary, executive engineer water supply and sewerage board, Mehsana.
"From Thursday morning, the municipal areas including, Kheralu, Vadanagar, Visnagar and Unjha in Mehsana district, Siddhpur in Patan district and Palanpur in Banaskantha besides 602 villages will have to make own arrangements for water," said Chaudhary.
Sources said that the pipeline with 1.4 metre diameter had got rusted and its maintenance was due. "We want to complete the work before summer sets in," added the sources.
"We will be providing water through tankers to the city," said sources in Siddhpur municipality.
The pipeline is infamous for repeated leakages hampering water supply, said Kamlesh Shah a resident of Palanpur. In January, the water supply was suspended for three days due to breach in the pipeline.
