Faith & Love of God – I

 – Ved Guliani

People often say they love God and have faith in Him. They keep His idols and pictures at home.

But when some sorrow in the form of loss or tragedy occurs in life they curse Him and may even throw His pictures away and break the idols.

Is this faith & love?

People worship God and undertake long journeys to appease Him. They also tie threads ‘of wishes’ in or round the pilgrim place. They claim to be very devoted and loving children of God.

If their wish is granted, they come back to ‘untie’ that piece of thread. But if it is not, …….?

Is this faith & love?

People often say that this world is a stage where we all human beings are actors in the ‘Drama of Life’, scripted and directed by the Supreme Soul. We say that our love and sincerity to God lies in the manner in which we play our ‘assigned role’.

During the course of ups and downs of life, we pray to Him to grant our wishes or give us even some ‘undeserved’ luxuries and comforts. We believe that being omnipotent, He should grant the wish and it should make no difference to Him. We don’t seem to realize that any abrupt change in the script of the drama will spoil the whole story and interest in the drama of life.

If the wish is not granted we call Him indifferent and uncaring and even cruel and unfeeling.

Is this our faith and love of God?

Faith & Love of God – II

People believe that it is the cycle of Time that governs the universe. Time is understood in four eras i.e. Satiyuga, Treta-yug, Dwaper-yuga and Kaliyuga. It is also believed that at the end of this cycle when the sins, vices and evil grow to their maximum, God re-incarnates on this earth and destroys all evil and re-establishes the good and the Satiyuga. (Yada, yada hi dharmasya, glanir….)

But we often see people invoking God and entreating upon Him to come and overpower and destroy the evil and vices. They feel that the vices in the present world can be eliminated only when He re-incarnates and re-starts the cycle of Time. Yet they believe that the Kaliyuga has about 40 thousand more years before the new era of Satiyuga starts again.

If He comes at the end of Satiyuga and re-establishes the divinity in man, why should then we have the Treta, Dwaper etc. Every cleansing should re-start the original one i.e. the Satiyuga. If He keeps coming at the end of every yuga (Satiyuga, Treta, Dwaper etc.), why should there have remained any evil after His advent?

Is this faith and love of God?

People very often go to the places of worship like the temples, mosques and churches for the appeasement of God and the fulfillment of their wishes. They are quite regular and punctually dedicated to such visits. Their devotion is very sincere and beyond question. They undertake long and tedious journeys even in hostile terrain for this purpose.

At the same time they say the God is ‘Omnipresent’. If He is everywhere and in everything, why do they go to such distant places to worship Him? If He is everywhere and in everything and everybody, why do I expect my wishes to be granted by others? Is God also not in me?

Is this faith and love of God?
