Transport Minister V. Senthil Balaji performed ‘Kalasinga puja’ at Sri Ramanathaswamy temple here for party Supremo Jayalalithaa.

Accompanied by Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare S. Sundararaj, Mr. Balaji performed the puja with ‘1008’ silver ‘kalasams’ amid chanting of mantras by 19 priests drawn from various temples in the State on Monday.

The Ministers and party office-bearers prayed in reverence, sitting in front of the sanctum sanctorum at the temple for the return of Ms. Jayalalithaa as Chief Minister as the priests conducted ‘abishekam’ to Lord Ramanathaswamy with sacred water filled in the kalasams.

The ‘1008’ coconuts were placed on top of the kalasams and they were decorated with lotus flowers. The kalasams were arranged in the form of a lingam. The sacred water was drawn from ‘kodi theertham,’ one of the 22 theerthams inside the temple. The priests also performed ‘Ruthrabishekam’ during the four-hour long ritual, sources in the temple said.

The special puja and worship assumed significance as the Karnataka High Court had on Wednesday, reserved orders on the appeals filed by Ms. Jayalalithaa and others, including her aide Sasikala, challenging the Bangalore special court order, convicting them in the disproportionate wealth case.
