Facebook walls and Twitter handles were plastered with cries of shame as social networking sites went berserk on a day which many have come to refer to as a black day for democracy in the State.
There was no death of comments that ranged from critical and sarcastic to outright hilarious taking potshots at the MLAs.
A post by one Joseph Tharun wondered whether they were lawmakers or criminals. “100 per literacy, it seems…shame,” he posted.
Mahesh S. Panicker observed that there was a time when Kerala society used to look upon similar news from other States rather condescendingly.
Bindu Satyajith wondered whether the Constitution said a Finance Mminister could present the budget on mere gesture from the Speaker. “Does that mean giving gestures we can pass and present Bills...does procedure are just mere paper in the hands of political parties,” she said.
Writer N.S. Madhavan gave a funny spin to the event when he tweeted, which was re-tweeted many a time since then, that “permission to present the budget was granted by the Speaker to Mani, not verbally, but through gestures - in true Kathakali tradition.” Senior journalist B.R.P. Bhaskar posted that the budget was presented in the Assembly “amid scenes reminiscent of street fight by rival gangs.”
Filmi style
Then there were comments that tickled the funny bone using filmi images and dialogues to give a spin to the chaotic happenings in the Assembly.
One such doing the rounds was that immortal scene from the Malayalam blockbuster Godfather where an unconscious Sankarady is held upright by Innocent from behind who then gestures at villains to corner them. Another comment was that the Opposition put V. Sivankutty, MLA, on the table in protest against the Finance Minister tabling the budget.
The images of protesting MLAs standing on the table with their dhotis folded were morphed into posters of similarly posed Mohanlal in the film Thaandavam .
