The Vikings are in the market for a little help on the defensive line, with defensive end George Selvie a reported target after the team wasn’t able to sign Michael Johnson before he struck a deal with the Bengals.

If Selvie joins the team, he’ll be working with a new member of the team’s coaching staff. Rob Rodriguez announced on Twitter Monday that he is leaving his job as an assistant coach for the University of Texas-El Paso in order to join Mike Zimmer’s staff.

Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports that Rodriguez will be the team’s new assistant defensive line coach and work with defensive line coach Andre Patterson. Robb Akey had the job last year, but moved on to become the Redskins defensive line coach.

Patterson was the defensive coordinator at UTEP from 2010-2012 and Rodriguez was part of his staff. As Tomasson points out, Rodriguez also played for Mike Price when he was at a linebacker at the school and that Price was one of Zimmer’s coaching mentors.
