Award to mill worker

March 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - COIMBATORE:

M. Rupa (21) from Vellore district joined work at KPR Mills here in 2009, when she was 16 years old. Her parents are daily wage earners and she has two sisters and two brothers. She had completed class X and since her family was unable to support her to continue studies, Rupa joined the mill. With the education facilities available at the mill for the workers, she completed Plus Two and went on to do BCA through Tamil Nadu Open University. She scored 78 per cent in the first year, 88 per cent in the second year and 70 per cent in the third year. Since she is the highest scorer in the State, the CEMCA presented her with an award and Rs. 25,000 at a function held in Chennai on Tuesday.

She plans to continue studies even as she works at the mills and do MCA and IAS. I used to spend nearly five hours every day, after work, for studies. I want to extend all possible support to my family after completing my studies,” she says.
