Research into corneal defects stressed

Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam stressed the need for greater focus on research into effective treatment of corneal defects, refractive errors, colour blindness and glaucoma which were major causes of visual impairment around the world.

He suggested that nanotechnology would be helpful in curing people of these debilitating diseases. Besides, optic nerve regeneration which could partially reverse blindness caused by glaucoma should be worked upon, he observed. Dedicating L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (Kode Venkatadri Chowdary Campus-LVPEI) at Tadigadapa here to the people of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, Dr. Kalam said efforts like finding a therapeutic vaccine for glaucoma should be encouraged to curb the menace of blindness while laying due emphasis on finding treatments with traditional systems of medicine.
