The Department of Humanities and Science of the Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, organised a motivational talk on “Boys and girls be ambitious” given by ADGP Sylendra Babu.

In his address Mr. Sylendra Babu emphasised the importance of listening skills.

He quoted many examples of those who had come into the limelight with sheer hard work and dedication. He asked students to improve communication skills in English and to develop additional expertise in foreign languages such as Japanese and French. College Founder and Chairman S. Mohamed Jaleel presided over the function.

Workshop

The Department of Management Studies of Madurai Kamaraj University College, Madurai, organised a workshop on ‘Emerging trends in business’ in which N. Namasivayam, Director, Department of Management Studies, St. Michael College of Engineering and Information Technology, Kalayarkoil, traced the evolution of business from the 18th century to 21st century. He also provided tips for running a business successfully in a competitive world. S. Vijayakumar, Head, Department of Management Studies, welcomed the participants. S. Irulappan, Principal, delivered the presidential address. G. Selvaraj proposed a vote of thanks.

Founder’s Day

Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, observed the Founder’s Day recently in which M. Arunagiri, former Principal, Thiagarajar College, delivered the L. Narayanan Chettiar memorial lecture.

T. Narayanan, member, management committee, presided over the function. M. Kannan, Principal, welcomed the gathering. K. Krishnan, Vice-Principal, proposed a vote of thanks.

Conference

The PG Department of Chemistry of Thiagarajar College, Madurai, organised a two-day national conference on ‘Frontier areas in chemistry’ on February 26 and 27, in collaboration with School of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University.

Professors and scientists from renowned educational and research institutions delivered lectures at the conference, which was inaugurated by G. Mugesh, Professor, Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

In his address, Dr. Mugesh emphasised the importance of learning the subject in English and explained how a student could get through competitive examinations like State Level Eligibility Test and National Eligibility Test.

A. Suganthi, Head, Department of Chemistry, welcomed the gathering. T. Rajasekar, Principal, presided over the inaugural session. P. Prakash, convener of the conference, proposed a vote of thanks. The resource persons at the conference included Sheela Berchmans, Chief Scientist, Central Electrochemical Institute; S. Muthusubramanian, Chairperson, School of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University; R. Murugesan, Director, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education; S. Velmathi of Department of Chemistry, NIT, Tiruchi, and M. Periasamy, Professor, School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad. About 300 participants from all over India presented their research papers. Prof. Periasamy delivered the valedictory address.

Awards ceremony

The fifth awards ceremony of the Department of Mathematics of Yadava College, Madurai, was held recently. S. Dhanasekaran, Principal, presided over the function in which former heads of the department — V. C. S. Immanuel, P. Rama Pandi, M. Subbiah Das and K Kannan — were honoured. A unique scheme, ‘Guru Dakshina,’ was initiated by alumni Parthasarathy and Arumugam for giving awards to meritorious students of the department. Rajesh welcomed the gathering and Anantharaman proposed a vote of thanks. Prof. Kannan donated Rs. 50,000 for training students of mathematics for competitive examinations.

Graduation Day

The N. M. S. Sermathai Vasan College for Women, Madurai, celebrated the 18th Graduation Day on February 28. P. Vijayan, Controller of Examinations, Madurai Kamaraj University, delivered an address on ‘Empowerment of women and promotional and motivational activities in learning’ and distributed degree certificates to graduates in the presence of G. Maris Kumar, president, A. M. Selvarajan, vice-president, and G. Karikolraj, secretary. T. Visumathi, Principal, welcomed the gathering.

Valedictory function

The valedictory function of ‘Nexgen ’15,’ an event organised by the Department of Computer Science of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, was held on February 26. S.M. Valli, Head, Department of Computer Science, Thiagarajar College, spoke on ‘Digital water marking’ at the session. K. Sudharani, Head, Department of Computer Science, welcomed the gathering. Director V.K. Rajamani delivered the presidential address. Principal C. Ramalakshmi offered felicitations. K. Mahalakshmi proposed a vote of thanks.

Symposium

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of K. L. N. College of Engineering, Pottapalayam, organised a national-level technical symposium, ‘REFLECHIR’15,’ on February 26.

It was inaugurated by S. A. Saravana Pandian, Managing Director, Embien Technologies. K. N. K. Karthick, president, presided over the inaugural session.

Exhibition

The Pandian Saraswathi Yadav Engineering College, Arasanoor, organised a science exhibition on February 28 with the objective of showcasing the skills and innovative ideas of students. More than 170 students participated in the expo. Prizes and certificates to the best exhibits were distributed by D. Dhanushkodi, Managing Director, Sun Pressing.

The Principal, V. Dharmalingam, welcomed the gathering. Managing Director SP. Varadharajan presided over the function. Dean T. Sakthidharan proposed a vote of thanks.

Lecture

The Michael Institute of Management, Madurai, organised a lecture on ‘Corporate expectations from management graduates’ by Revathy Kannadhasan of Auro Lab on February 24. She spoke about the general expectations of the corporate from management graduates such as positive attitude, individual personality, conceptual clarity, preparation of perfect resume, learning and communication skills. R. Bernardshaw, Director, presided over the event. S. Lakshmi Priya welcomed the gathering and K. Ranjith proposed a vote of thanks.

A panel discussion was held on February 25 on ‘Marketing Madurai’ in which MBA students discussed the various marketing opportunities in tourism, education, information technology, industry, retailing and health care.

II

The Madurai Institute of Engineering and Technology, Pottapalayam, organised a lecture on ‘Calculator and maths’ by Rajamourian, a student, in which he explained the functions and applications of a calculator.

R.S. Durga Devi welcomed the participants. S. Sivamurugan proposed a vote of thanks.
