The medical profession needed strong ethical foundation, otherwise its esteem will go down, Special Chief Secretary (medical and health) L. V. Subrahmanyam said here on Sunday.
“Even now the society’s expectations from the medical profession have not gone down. Society understands that just because a few are not good the rest are not good. Raise above mediocrity……stick to the campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (working hours). Bring some sense of proportion into your service instead of forcing a patient to spend his life’s savings on treatment”, Mr. Subrahmanyam said while delivering the Dr. P. Brahmayya Sastry memorial oration.
He felt the need to make the students and teachers to take the Hippocratic oath every semester so that its contents are drilled into their mind.
Mr. Subrahmanyam dwelt on the role of teachers and the medical profession in the country after observing that the family traditions kept the knowledge of the Vedas alive and that, like the learning of the Vedas medical profession was also a family tradition. But the present generation found to be having deficit value system and the society was drifting, he regretted.
Mr. Subrahmanyam also found that the teachers did not understand their role and most of them have just drifted into the profession.
The official insisted that the Clinical Establishments Act must be adopted by A.P. also according to which a patient has to be informed how much he has to pay for a medical test and why he has to undergo the test. The oration was organised by the Dr. P. Brahmayya Sastry Memorial Oration Committee. Later the NTR University of Health Sciences’ Dr. D. Govinda Reddy memorial oration was delivered by Chairman of Department of Medicine of Bronx Lebanon Hospital of New York Sridhar S. Chilimuri. Vice-Chancellor of NTR UHS and president of the Dr. P. Brahmayya Sastry Memorial Oration Committee T. Raviraju spoke about Dr. Sastry and Dr. Govinda Reddy, both former Principals of Andhra Medical College. Director of Medical Education G. Santa Rao, former Superintendent of KGH M.V.R.J. Somayajulu and noted gastroenterologist E. Pedaveerraju spoke.
