Three held for lorry driver’s murder

March 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

Police investigation into Saturday’s murder of P. Ilaiyaraja (33) of Sanganthiradu under Suththamalli police limits has proved that the killing of the Dalit youth was only due to personal enmity and not because of any caste-based motive.

The police said Ilaiyaraja was found murdered near his village on Saturday morning. Since he had been beheaded, it was suspected that the murder could have been committed with some caste-based motive.

The police said Ilaiyaraja, a lorry driver working in a stone quarry, was also working as a watchman at Kollankulam where one Kombaiah of North Sanganthiradu had got permission to carry out fish culture. When one Maharajan from the same area caught fishes without getting permission from Kombaiah, watchman Ilaiyaraja assaulted him recently.

Maharajan, with the help of his friends, hacked Ilaiyaraja to death on Friday night and chopped off his head. The special teams formed to nab the assailants arrested Subramanian alias Saravanan, Muppidathi and Thoppusamy on Sunday. The police are on the lookout for Maharajan, Ayyappan and Kandavelu.
