People gathered around a pit at Marnavami Doddi, a village in Maddur taluk of Mandya district, where the bodies of a woman and her two children were found floating on Sunday.

A woman and her two children, who were reported missing for the past three days, were found dead in a pit under mysterious circumstances at Marnavami Doddi in Maddur taluk of the district on Sunday.

According to the Besagarahalli police, the bodies of Nagamma Venkatesh (30) and her children, V. Spandana (6) and V. Reshma (2), were floating in a pit containing knee-deep water.

While the police, quoting Ms. Nagamma’s relatives, said the woman had committed suicide after killing her daughters, the local residents expressed suspicion over the incident as there was not much water in the pit. The residents first saw the bodies floating in the pit and later informed the victim’s husband Venkatesh, the police said. Ms. Nagamma’s mother has filed a complaint of ‘unnatural death’ in Maddur police station, R. Shivakumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Malavalli subdivision), told The Hindu.
