Nayi Brahmins pitch for political reservation

March 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - KAKINADA:

Stating that no member of the Nayi Brahmin community has entered the Legislative Assembly or Parliament so far, Andhra Pradesh Nayi Brahmins Welfare Association general secretary Malkapuram Kanaka Rao on Monday demanded political reservation for the community. “All parties should spare seats for the community in the Legislative Council election,” he said. “In Andhra Pradesh alone, there are 20 lakh Nayi Brahmins, who work as barbers and musical band players. Though the government has listed the community as a Backward Class, we are the most backward among BCs, and, therefore, special focus on the community is the need of the hour,” Mr. Kanaka Rao added. He was speaking on the sidelines of the State-level conference of the association here. “The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams alone is earning Rs. 200 crore a year through auction of human hair. Can’t the government set up a corporation for Nayi Brahmins by spending 10 per cent of the revenue?” he asked. The association also demanded that the government grant pension to aging members of band parties, regularise those who work at Kalyanakatta at temples and fill vacancies of barbers in the police department and government hospitals.
