Governor for application of scientific knowledge to address State problems

JAMMU, Mar 14: Inaugurating 10th JK Science Congress at Jammu University, here today, Governor N N Vohra called upon the Scientists and researchers to rededicate their efforts for effective application of scientific knowledge and technological innovations to address the challenges being faced by the State and the country.
He also stressed the need for close collaboration among the Universities, research institutions, policy makers and the Government agencies to harvest the benefits of advancements made in the field of Science and Technology for the welfare, progress and prosperity.
“If we work together and collaborate with agencies like DST and other allied agencies and avail the opportunities provided by them, then we would be able to overcome many lacunas in areas of research in Science and Technology and our scientists and researchers would be able to find solution to various identified problems of the State,” he explained and drew attention towards the climate change here during the past.
The Governor was chief guest at the inaugural function of the three-day 10th JK Science Congress, on the theme “Science and Technology for Inclusive Development: A way forward”, which is being attended by more than 700 scientists and scholars from the State.
Maintaining that the Congress is a great platform for our researchers and scientists to hold deliberations, Mr Vohra said that the measures and findings of the three-day event would provide solution to various problems, which are common all over the world.
Earlier, the JU Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma dwelt on theme of the Congress and said that our ability to contribute to the world of Science and Technology depends crucially on the educational system and thus, science education requires much more attention.
Maintaining that the Universities are not just centers for production and dissemination of knowledge, he said these must mould themselves into institutions where the carriers of modern and traditional knowledge need and improve each other with the process of cross-pollination.
In his welcome address, Prof K K Sharma, Organizing Secretary of the Congress, threw light on the theme and sub-themes of the Congress.
Speaking on the occasion, Parvez Ahmed Malik, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, gave the detail of the activities being carried out by the Department of Science and Technology.
Prof Rajni Dhingra, Co-organizing Secretary, presented the formal vote of thanks.
On this occasion, 11 Young Scientists Awards were given.  Dr Parvaiz Ahmad Sofi, Sr Asst Professor (Plant Breeding and Genetic) SKUAST-Kashmir was awarded in the field of Environmental Sciences including Earth, Atmosphere and Planetary Sciences. The award was jointly shared by Dr Irfan Rashid, Asstt. Professor and Dr Riffat John, Assistant Professor (both from Department of Botany, University of Kashmir), in Engineering and Technology. The award was jointly shared by Dr Ajay Koul, Assistant Professor, SMVDU and Shabir Ahmad Sofi, Assistant Professor, National Institute of Technology, Srinagar and Dr Abid Hamid Dar, Scientist, IIIM Jammu in the field of Life Sciences. Award was jointly shared by Manzoor Ah Rather, IIIM Sanat Nagar, Srinagar and Dr Parvinder Paul Singh, Scientist-B, IIIM, Jammu in the field of Chemical Sciences.  In Mathematical Sciences, Statistics and Computer Sciences, the award was jointly shared by Dr  Mukhtar Ahmad  Khandey, Sr Assistant Professor, University of Kashmir, Srinagar and Dr  Jyoti Mahajan, Lecturer Deptt of Govt College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu and in the field of Home /Social  Sciences, Dr  Sarika Manhas was awarded the Young Scientist Award.
