The Vaniyambadi Taluk Police took 15 persons into preventive custody in connection with their act of gheraoing the car of the School Education Minister K.C. Veeramani at Kalandra near Vaniyambadi on Saturday morning.

According to the police, about 100 persons belonging to Kalandra, who heard about the Minister travelling to Tirupattur from Ambur, blocked his car to meet him.

They pressed their demand for the issue of pattas for the houses built on poromboke land close to the main road, since they and their families have been living in the houses for nearly 50 years.

The Minister, who got down and spoke to them promised to look into their demand.

Majority of the villagers dispersed after the Minister left, but 15 of them remained.

They attempted to block the road and the police arrested them.

They were later released in the evening.
