LUCKNOW: A transport department officer had to run for his life while performing his duty on Saturday. Officiating ARTO Surya Dev Singh had taken action against four overloaded trucks on early Saturday. The violent men intercepted Singh’s official vehicle near Itaunja flyover and with stones and charged at him and driver wooden sticks. The alert driver sped away averting a major incident.

Along with driver Raju and other staff members, from 7am the officer was checking overloaded heavy motor vehicles at Sitapur road. He stopped a truck in Madiaon, two in Ittaunja and another in Khairabad area in Sitapur district. At noon, Singh was heading back to the city after having covered the route assigned to him. Near Awadh dharma kanta in Itaunja, goons waylaid Singh’s vehicle.
Just when the group smashed the windscreen, Raju sped away. The driver stopped only at Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) police station and the duo rushed inside. That was when the group ran away. While the duo could recall the colour of the SUVs and cars, they could not note down the registration number. The officer said some touts and middlemen were behind the attack. “They operate locally and were infuriated after I took action,” added the officer.
