Lightning claims 1 in Dangs

The unseasonal rainfall resulted in a decline in day temperatures in Saurashtra region.

DUE to lightning accompanied with unseasonal rainfall, one death was reported from the Dangs district in South Gujarat Thursday night. While, the unseasonal rainfall and thundershowers hit various districts across the state, the meteorological department has predicted light rain with thundershowers across the state till March 16.

The deceased is identified as Giri Valvi (60), a resident of Keshu village in Ahwa taluka of the Dangs district. Sources said that she was standing outside her house and suddenly the light struck on her which resulted into her death. The lightning also had caused death of a cow in same village, on Thursday night that left the animal owner Vetiya Valvi in shock.

Amreli in Saurashtra region received maximum rainfall of 8 millimetre followed by Veraval with 3.4 millimetre and Surendranagar 1.6 millimetre while traces in Bhavnagar, Dwarka, Okha, Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat in south Gujarat.

The unseasonal rainfall resulted in a decline in day temperatures in Saurashtra region. Also, the night time temperatures witnessed considerable decline across the state with 3 to 4 degree Celsius than normal temperatures.

Surat and South Gujarat received unseasonal rainfall on Thursday night though Friday was a dry day in the region. The downpour was accompanied with high-speed winds and thunderstorm. As per weather department, the maximum temperature of Surat was 33 degrees while later in the evening there was dip in the temperature which was recorded to 21 degrees.

With the unseasonal rainfall in Saurashtra and South region, the mango fruit was also damaged in the districts of Valsad, Navsari and Surat.

With the change in the climate, the residents of Surat were seen having a relief from the day-long scorching heat. As they enjoyed bike rides, while many came out from their homes to get drenched in the unseasonal rainfall. Many motorbikes were also seen skidding on wet roads while some of the trees in the city were uprooted.

The rainfall had been witnessed in Surat, Valsad, Navsari and the Dangs districts on Thursday evening which lasted for some time. The weather department officials said that the rainfall was with the high-speed winds and thunderstorm.
