GREATER NOIDA: Bollywood actor and model Sonal Chauhan’s house in Greater Noida was broken into late on Thursday. The burglars made off with cash and jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh as well as Sonal’s Miss World Tourism crown, which she won in 2005.
Sonal herself is abroad but her mother Shivani Chauhan and sister-in-law Stuti Chauhan were in the house on the day of the burglary.
They had gone to the market when the thieves broke in, police said.

Talking to TOI, Sonal’s brother Vikram Chauhan said, “Sonal’s crowns, Rs 3.5 lakh cash and jewellery have been stolen. The total estimated cost of the loss is Rs 40 lakh.” An FIR was lodged against unidentified persons at Kasna police station and a forensics team visited the house.
Vikram said he and his father Raghuraj Singh Chauhan, a former cop, had gone to their native place at Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh. “Sonal is out of the country. My mother and my wife left home around 1pm to go to the market in Noida. As my mother told the domestic help to not come in the evening for work, some labourers working at a construction site nearby overheard her. Someone must have done a recce of the house before planning the crime,” Vikram said.

Sonal’s mother and sister-in-law realized something was wrong when they could not open the second gate’s lock, which was jammed. They heard some noise coming from inside the single-storey house in Sector Beta-2. “She raised an alarm and neighbours came out in response. By the time the second gate was opened, the burglars had made off with the cash and valuables,” said Vikram.
Vikram said a neighbour had seen two people behind his house and they fled when he accosted them. “A man in a yellow shirt was also seen behind the house talking on the phone, perhaps coordinating with the burglars inside the house,” Vikram said, adding it appears to be someone known to the family as the location of the valuables was known to the burglars.
SP (rural) Brijesh Singh said five teams had been formed to nab the culprits and a dozen people had been detained. Police have also sought CCTV footage from nearby areas.
