Gurgaon’s second Raahgiri Day at Palam Vihar, supported by the Times of India, is fast on its way to becoming part of the area’s Sunday routine, like the other Raahgiri, with all the exercise, socializing, dancing and musical performances that come with it.
This Sunday, things started with a warm-up Zumba session, followed by cycling, skating, yoga, kick-boxing and a street play.
There were many children and grown-ups playing football and other sports at the TOI sports arena.
The road was full of young boys and girls, couples and old people on their cycles and skates, with others carrying their badminton rackets and footballs. The street play had a message, as usual, and was based on the Nirbhaya gang-rape. Manjul Bhasin, a resident of Sector 22, who had come to cycle, told us, “We don’t otherwise have big parks and grounds for such these activities. This is the best way to keep Palam Vihar healthy.” Residents emphasized that these kinds of events will help people connect with each other. Nandini Kashyap, a first-timer to the event, said, “The way the event has been handled has totally changed my perception of the area. Raahgiri has brought a certain modernity quotient to this area.’
“From health to socializing, and even children playing – all of it comes under the ambit of Raahgiri Day. Palam Vihar was always neglected by officials, but this event will help make the status of Palam Vihar clearer,’ said Sunil Yadav, president, RWA Palam Vihar. “Having been to the other Raahgiri Day a couple of times, I feel this should be done in Delhi too. Also, we have very few parks and spaces to continue with these types of activities. This event will hopefully incite Gurgaon officials to make more such spaces available as soon as possible,” said Saurabh Katyal, a resident of Palam Vihar.
