In what should be counted as a set back to the State government’s objective in setting up an expert committee to recommend ways to end atrocities on women and children and ensure their safety, the committee chairperson, former Law Minister M.C. Nanaiah, has resigned from the post.
The 29-member committee was set up in August 2014. It was expected to suggest amendments to the existing laws to prevent sexual violence on women and children. In turn, Mr. Nanaiah had set up two subcommittees, one under Motamma and another under K.B. Shanappa, both MLCs, to make recommendations to the main committee for preparing a final report. Mr. Nanaiah, also a former MLC, submitted his resignation letter to Home Minister K.J. George on Thursday. “I, for compelling personal reasons, tendered my resignation to the chairmanship of the committee, to come into effect from today,” Mr. Nanaiah said in the letter.
Three days ago, Mr. Nanaiah said the committee would submit its report along with its recommendations to the government in the next three months. It is not clear if his resignation would delay the process on a crucial issue. Mr. Nanaiah was unavailable for comments when contacted by The Hindu .
