Kansai Electric plans 2 northwest coal plants

OSAKA -- Kansai Electric Power and trading house Marubeni received initial approval Thursday for plans to build two coal-fired power plants in northwestern Japan that will give the Osaka-based utility its first major link to the greater Tokyo market.

     The government of Akita Prefecture gave the green light to the project, expected to cost more than 300 billion yen ($2.47 billion).
