Ethnic Clashes And Bomb Blasts Have Killed Over 1000 In Assam In The Last 15 Years

Not all has been hail and hearty in one of India's biggest states of the Northeast, Assam. The state has witnessed more than 1000 deaths in the last 15 years due to ethnic clashes and bomb blasts. To be more specific, 535 lives were lost in eight ethnic clashes and 471 people were killed (395 civilians and 76 security personnel) in bomb blasts in the state in the same period. 

According to a report in The Hindu on Thursday, Rockybul Hussain, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, presented these statistics in the Assam Assembly on Monday. He was replying on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, when a question by BJP's Monoranjan Das was raised.

Here is the list of the eight attacks that engulfed the state:

1) Hmar-Dimasa clashes (February 26, 2003-July 12, 2003): 57 lives lost in Dima Hasao district.

2) Karbi-Kuki clashes (October 30, 2003-April 12, 2004): 98 killed in Kabri Anglong district

3) Karbi-Dimasa clashes (September 26, 2005-December 28, 2005): 106 died in Karbi Anglong district

4) Bodo-Muslim clashes (August 14, 2008-August 20, 2008, October 3, 2008-October 17, 2008): 64 killed in Udalguri and Darrang district

5) Zeme Naga-Dimasa clashes (March 19, 2009-September 9, 2009): 73 lives in Dima Hasao district

6) Garo-Rabha clashes (January 1, 2011-January 13, 2011): 12 dead in Goalpara district

7) Karbi-Rengma Naga clashes (February 27, 2013-January 7, 2014): 16 lives lost in Karbi Anglong district

8) Bodo-Muslim clashes (July 19, 2012-November 17, 2012): 109 killed in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa and Dhubri.

The minister also informed that currently there are eight radical political and non-political agencies that are active in Assam:

1) United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent)

2) National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit)

3) Karbi People's Liberation Tiger

4) Kamatapur Liberation Organisation

5) Harkat-ul-Muzahideen

6) Muslim United Liberation Tiger of Assam

7) Jamaat'ul Mujahideen of Bangladesh

8) Communist Party of India (Maoist)

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi stated in his budget speech on Tuesday that his government signed a record 21 agreements with the Centre for suspension of operations with 21 militant outfits.

We just hope the law and order situation improves in the state.
