Rescued woman is divorced: NGO

March 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:31 am IST - CHENNAI:

As is the case with many wandering mentally-ill women across the country, Farida Khatun, a woman rescued by an NGO on Monday, is also divorced.

“We managed to contact her husband in Uttar Pradesh. He said they had been divorced for a year, and he wanted nothing to do with her. He looks after their three children,” said S. Vidyaakar, founder-director of Udavum Karangal, the NGO that rescued Farida from a bus stop near Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Found six months pregnant and with a broken thigh bone, the 34-year-old was taken to a private hospital in Aminjikarai.

On Wednesday, after examination by doctors, she was found fit for surgery. “The surgery will take place on Thursday night. Until then, a traction has been made for her thigh bone,” said Mr. Vidyaakar.

According to the NGO, Farida said she was lured with the promise of a job by a group of men, who then abused her. “We have found out she has a brother and will try to reach him after the surgery,” said Mr. Vidyaakar.
