Eight interventional cardiac procedures, including valvuloplasty and closure of heart valves, performed at the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research were witnessed live by nearly 600 interventional cardiologists in Vietnam.
The cardiologists, participants in the three-day Asia Pacific Cardiac and Structural Intervention (CSI) 2015 conference that was held at Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, beginning March 5, appreciated the doctors who performed the procedures at Jayadeva.
Institute director C.N. Manjunath said nearly 50 per cent of cardiac birth defects and other cardiac diseases can be treated by non-surgical invasive methods. “Earlier, these defects could be treated only through open heart surgeries,” he said.
Of the eight patients, who underwent the procedures, five were aged below 15. The procedures included closure of congenital birth defects, valvotomies, (dilatation of valves) and some other rare interventions. A team of seven doctors, led by Dr. Manjunath, performed the procedures.
“While six patients had holes in the heart, one had a narrowed valve and another had a narrowed artery. The holes in the heart were closed using umbrella devices and valvuloplasty was done for the remaining cases,” Dr. Manjunath said.
