Akrama Sakrama: slum residents seek regularisation

March 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - BELAGAVI:

Residents of slums near Sreenagar Garden and Vantamuri in the Belagavi City Corporation limits have urged the authorities to regularise their huts and sheds under the State government’s Akrama Sakrama scheme.

On Wednesday, they marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and staged a dharna under the banner of the Akhil Karnataka Alemari Samudaya Maha Sangha and the Karnataka Dalit Backward and Minorities Samiti.

Lower strata

Samiti leader Mallikarjun Jakati said nearly 270 families had been living in huts and sheds in Sreenagar and Vantamuri colonies for over 30 years.

They belong to the lower strata of society and they earn their livelihood as daily wage labourers or for partly monthly wages. Corporation commissioner M.R. Ravi Kumar promised to consider their demand.
