Ten people were killed on Monday when two helicopters collided in Argentina for the filming of reality show Dropped for France’s TF1. Among the dead were three French sports stars: sailor Florence Arthaud, Olympic swimmer Camille Muffat and Olympic boxer Alexis Vastine. Five members of the production team and the two Argentinian pilots also died in the crash, which happened within moments of takeoff, reportedly in good weather conditions. The athletes were being flown to remote areas while blindfolded to survive in the wilderness for the Adventure Line Productions series.

IN THE NEWS

Lester Holt is holding his own in the anchor seat. With five months left to go of Brian Williams’ suspension for embellished reporting, NBC News was first for the second consecutive week in viewers and key demos the week of March 2.

As Viacom proceeds with consolidating its Music and Entertainment groups, layoffs started at MTV and VH1 on Tuesday. The goal of the restructuring is to save $250 million, said CEO Philippe Dauman in a speech March 9. “Some of the programming that we acquired years ago just doesn’t work anymore; particularly, when you have off-broadcast programming that is ubiquitously on SVOD,” said Dauman. "So we’re going to abandon some of that programming as we go forward and continue to invest in what works.”

Verizon customers got an email Tuesday informing them that the company’s agreements with The Weather Channel and Weather Scan expired and will not be renewed. “We were disappointed when late yesterday, March 9, Verizon FiOS dropped The Weather Channel from their lineup while our companies continued to be in active conversations regarding a contract renewal,” said the company in a statement. “They have made it clear to us that they no longer wish to negotiate, despite our desire to continue to serve their subscribers.”

TLC’sSay Yes to the Prom” initiative has expanded in its fourth year across the country, to make the prom dreams of high school girls come true and connect them with industry professionals for mentoring and networking. Partners include JCPenney, Make-A-Wish and Becca’s Closet. Among the organizations donating dresses is Bridals by Lori, home to TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta. “As a mission-driven company, Discovery is committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work, and Say Yes to the Prom makes a real impact for deserving girls across the country,” said Adria Alpert Romm, chief human resources and global diversity officer, Discovery Communications. Tour kicks off Monday, March 16 in NYC.

There’s been a twist in ABC’s Bachelorette format. During the net’s After the Final Rose on Monday, it was announced there will be not one, but two bachelorettes looking for love next summer, both from the just-concluded Bachelor season. Not clear how the math will work, but the competition starts with 25 men, who will have “the ultimate say on who would make the best wife.”

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation broke the Guinness World Records for “Largest Ever TV Drama Simulcast” on March 4, when planted spin-off CSI: Cyber was broadcast in 171 countries. That was enough to beat the record set by the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, beamed to 98 countries in 2013.

Music Choice and TV One are teaming to cross promote R&B Divas: LA’s newest cast member, Brave Williams. Starting today, Williams will be featured in Music Choice’s Take Back Your Music branding campaign to promote her latest video, “Road Trippin,” and the Divas episode airing Wednesday, March 11 at 10p will feature the singer visiting the Music Choice offices.

Oops, he did it again: The BBC suspended Jeremy Clarkson, longtime host of BBC2’s Top Gear, after “a fracas” with a producer. No details, but Clarkson said last May he was given a “final warning” and told he’d be fired if he made “one more offensive remark, anywhere, any time.”

Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti will star as Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in the HBO pic based on the tennis players’ 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” match.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

When it comes to ad spend, TV and digital don’t compete – they complement, according to David Cooperstein, CMO at Simulmedia and author of a new report, “The Future of TV and Digital Video,” based on a survey conducted by The CMO Club and Simulmedia. “Marketers learned from digital over the past decade that advertising can be targeted finely, measured deeply, and tied back to specific objectives to drive sales or other impacts,” Cooperstein tells Cynopsis. “But reach still matters, and emotion is hard to deliver in banners and search. So aligning digital and TV strategies is the real future of marketing.”

Information and marketing company Access Intelligence (and parent company of Cynopsis) acquired AdMonsters, the conference and trade show company serving the online advertising operations, ad technology and digital media markets. “AdMonsters has been on the leading edge of the technological and strategic evolution of online media operations, technology, and monetization for many years,” said Don Pazour, CEO of Access Intelligence, adding that the acquisition will “fast-track our leadership position in the areas of advanced marketing, technology and media.”
