One family, two murders and two life terms
LUCKNOW: Former parliamentarian DP Yadav is the second in his family to be convicted in a murder case and given a life term in jail. His son, Vikas Yadav, is serving a life term for the murder of Nitish Katara.
But D P Yadav and Vikas are not the only ones in the family to have been in the news for the wrong reasons. Yadav’s wife Umlesh, who won from Bisauli in the 2007 assembly election, has also had her share of troubles with the law.
She is Uttar Pradesh’s first MLA to be disqualified for the assembly on charges of paying for favourable coverage.
D P Yadav served two stints as member of Parliament from Sambhal. He was also elected to the Uttar Pradesh assembly four times. Building a political career on the foundations of a successful bootlegging business that he set up in the 1970s, D P Yadav was affiliated with the Samajwadi Party as well as the BJP. But in 2004, when he was to be given a Rajya Sabha ticket, the strongman was thrown out of the BJP after Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s strong objection to his entry.
Having becoming a political pariah ahead of the 2007 elections, D P Yadav floated his own political outfit, the Rashtriya Parivartan Dal in 2007. Umlesh and he became the only two members of the party to win the polls. However, the winning streak was short lived; D P Yadav lost both the 2012 assembly polls and the Lok Sabha election in 2014.
