THE Emerald and Semi-Precious Stones Mining Association of Zambia (ESMAZ) has appealed to the Government to support small-scale gemstone mines that are lying idle in the country.
Meanwhile, the Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the emerald mining industry following the encouraging performance recorded by Kagem Mining Limited at the latest auction of lower quality rough emeralds and beryl in Lusaka.
ESMAZ acting general secretary Shadrek Mwape said in an interview in Ndola that the association wanted Government to revive emerald mines that were dormant.
“At the moment, we have less than fine mines active in emerald mining while the others are dormant. Government needs to intervene and ensure that the mines are up and running as emeralds can contribute significantly to the growth of the mining industry,’ he said.
Mr Mwape said Government should put emphasis on reviving the country’s emerald mining sector as this had the potential to create the much needed jobs for young people.
Last year, Mines minister Christopher Yaluma said the Government had set aside US$10 million to revive emerald industry in Zambia.
The minister said this would be done by grouping small-scale emerald miners into cooperatives for them to procure mining equipment that will spur production.
Meanwhile, Mr Yaluma has said Government is happy with the results recorded by Kagem mining Limited from the latest auction of lower quality rough emeralds and beryl in Lusaka.
Kagem raked $14.5 million from the auction that attracted 21 companies from selected parts of the world.
“This is very good and Government also wants to spur the mining of amethyst to ensure that there is a variety of minerals on display during these auctions,” he said.
Mr Yaluma said the Government would also revive other emerald mines and empower small scale miners to participate in the local auctioning of gemstones.
