Baby kidnapped from Chennai Central

March 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:04 am IST - CHENNAI:

A five-month-old girl was kidnapped from Chennai Central Railway Station early Monday morning.

The parents, who were sleeping outside the air-conditioned waiting room, lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP). Investigating officers have examined CCTV footage and are trying to track a woman who is suspected to have walked away with the baby.

According to senior police officers, Raja and Padma of Kolathur had come to the station on Sunday night to board a train to Palani. “They had brought along their three children — four-year-old twins and the baby girl, Yazhini,” a senior GRP officer.

The family missed the train, which departed at 9.30 p.m. “As it had become late, they slept at the station, hoping to catch the next train to Palani. Padma claims the baby was sleeping next to her when she woke up at 1.20 a.m. on Monday. But an hour later she was missing,” the officer added.

“Camera footage shows a woman dressed in a salwar kameez walking with a baby. We are investigating from all angles,” he said. Sources said the camera outside the air-conditioned waiting room was not working at the time of the accident. “There is a need to maintain the equipment properly as it will aid in crime detection,” said an official.
